Magnetic Particle Inspection
Magnetic Particle Inspection
(MPI / MT / MPT)
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), also known as Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) or simply Magnetic Testing (MT), is a widely used Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method for detecting surface and shallow subsurface defects in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and their alloys.
How MPI Works
- The test piece is magnetized to generate a magnetic field.
- Magnetic particles (dry or wet, visible or fluorescent) are applied.
- Flux leakage occurs at flaws such as cracks or seams.
- Particles cluster at leakage points, visually indicating defects.
Quick Fact: MPI requires less surface preparation than many NDT methods, making it one of the fastest and most practical inspection techniques.
Applications of MPI
- Oil & Gas – pipelines, tanks, and pressure vessels.
- Power Generation – turbines, generators, and structural parts.
- Railways – rails, axles, and wheels.
- Manufacturing – castings, forgings, and weld inspections.
- Aerospace & Defense – critical ferromagnetic components.
Techniques & Equipment
- Hand Yoke AC/DC
- Bench Type (Headshot and Central Conductor methods)
- Dry Visible / Fluorescent Technique
- Wet Visible / Fluorescent Technique
