Dye Penetrant Testing

Dye Penetrant Testing

Dye Penetrant Testing

DPT, also known as Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), is a cost-effective and versatile non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface-breaking discontinuities such as cracks, porosity, and laps on non-porous materials like metals, plastics, and ceramics.

How It Works

A visible or fluorescent dye is applied to the surface of the component. The dye seeps into flaws through capillary action, and a developer is then applied to draw the dye back out—making the defects highly visible.

Wide Applications

  • Aerospace industry – engine parts
  • Automotive industry – welds and structural parts
  • Oil & Gas – pipelines and pressure vessels
  • General Manufacturing – various components

Limitations

  • Detects only surface-breaking flaws; not subsurface.
  • Unsuitable for porous or rough materials.
  • Requires thorough cleaning before inspection.

FANCO’s Services

FANCO provides NDT services to ensure products are flawless and meet all quality requirements. Our expert teams perform inspections during shutdowns—an essential activity for the health of static equipment—ensuring safety, compliance, and reliability. We also provide pre-service and material verification inspections using advanced NDT tools.

Reminder: Inspect the surface cracks before it’s too late.
